Photography Policy

Share your snaps with @bellmuseum!

We encourage still and video photography for personal, noncommercial use throughout the Bell Museum’s permanent exhibits, with the exception of programs in the Whitney and Elizabeth MacMillan Planetarium or if otherwise noted. Photographs cannot be published, sold, reproduced, transferred or otherwise commercially distributed.

In order to take the greatest care of our exhibits and specimens—and to keep galleries open and enjoyable for all visitors—the use of flash, external lighting equipment, drones, tripods, monopods or other stabilization gear is not permitted. Portraits and commercial photography require special permission, application, and location fees.

Commercial & Media

Members of the media are welcome to photograph or film for the purpose of news coverage. Make arrangements contact us at bellinfo@umn.edu.

Commercial Use

There are many creative possibilities at the new museum, from the unique architecture and collections to a full size woolly mammoth, immersive planetarium theater, and natural landscapes. All still photography and filming/taping, other than that being done by news organizations for news purposes, students filming as part of coursework, or for official University Units is considered commercial work.

We welcome proposals for commercial filming and photography and are happy to help location scouts find the right spots to suit their project. Fees vary depending on the request. Visit Filming and Photography at the University for more information and to submit a filming request.

Portrait Photoshoots

The Bell is a popular location for a variety of personal portraiture types including family, engagement, wedding, graduation, and others. If you are interested in the museum as a portrait location, please contact us at bellinfo@umn.edu for details.
