This summer, we’ve been hard at work assembling and distributing STEAM activity kits to schools, youth development organizations, and social service centers. The Bell Museum is proud to recognize lead corporate investment in this project from Boston Scientific and General Mills in addition to Donaldson Corporation, H.B. Fuller and UCare.
To combat the gap in educational support and enrichment experiences for underserved children and families that was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, we developed our program and piloted it by partnering with Roseville Schools in May. Families received enrichment activity bags with free meals at nutrition pickup sites.
By the end of the summer, this program will serve a total of 9,000 school children at schools in the Twin Cities metro area, with social service and community organizations as distribution and community engagement hubs.
These kits include four to six high-quality science and nature based activities and materials children can complete them on their own, or with minimal help from caregivers. We know how uncertain this time is for parents and caregivers who are essential workers and work outside the home, as well as those working remotely, and this is our way of offering fun and hands-on summer learning!
With the months out of school adding up, the Bell is helping fill the need for high-quality STEAM enrichment opportunities. The kits also include a free admission pass to the museum—we’re so thrilled to be welcoming visitors back in person now!
“We appreciate the Bell Museum developing this creative approach to the challenges posed by distance learning and the academic achievement gaps that disproportionately affect our low income communities and students of color.”—Boston Scientific
The kits are part of our Museum without Boundaries initiative, providing access to the museum and its wealth of resources and expertise—supporting learning and discovery wherever you happen to be!
Learn more and support the Museum without Boundaries initiative at the Bell as we expand our ability to serve as a resource across the state. All gifts will be matched dollar for dollar through generous support from the James Ford Bell Foundation!
