Spotlight Science: Fantastic Fishes

Saturday | November 06, 2021 | 10:00 am2:00 pm

Recommended for all ages
Spotlight Science is a regular program connecting you to current research at the University of Minnesota and giving you the chance to meet the scientists and students who make the projects possible. Join us for special talks and unique interactive experiences.
Did you know that the Bell Museum’s fish collection contains almost 50,000 cataloged “lots” of one or more individuals of a species? Each was collected at a particular place and time, and some date back to the 1800s! Despite Minnesota’s inland location, the museum’s collection includes many marine fishes from the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans in addition to species more common to the freshwaters of the Upper Midwest.
Join us for an up close look at some of these specimens (including some from the 1800s!) and explore the diversity and lives of fish with Professor Andrew Simons and fisheries student researchers in the Simons Lab at the College of Food, Agricultural, and Natural Resource Sciences. Learn how they use these collections to better understand the evolution and diversification of fishes and support work to conserve and protect Minnesota fisheries. Then head over to Collections Cove to observe specially prepared specimens under the microscope and stop by the Hive Classroom to create your own origami fish!
This is an in-person event at the Bell Museum. Activities and events will be held throughout the museum and are included in the cost of regular admission.
